Does hot weather affect hearing aids?

Yes, the primary risks to hearing aids in hot weather are humidity, perspiration (sweat), and extreme heat. In extreme cases these elements can cause short circuits, corrode batteries, clog microphones, and damage delicate internal components.

When you’re active, particularly across coastal areas, your body produces more moisture. This perspiration can easily get inside the device. Additionally, the extreme heat can impact battery life and warp plastic casings. A little bit of extra daily hearing aids maintenance during summer goes a long way.

Hearing technology is always evolving

We're here to be your guide, making the most advanced hearing aid technology simple, and suited to your personal needs. Our purpose is to combine superior expertise with ongoing care, so you can step into each day with confidence and joy.

Are hearing aids water proof or water resistant?

Most modern hearing aids are designed to be water resistant (often called ‘splash-proof’ or having an IP rating), but very few are truly waterproof for swimming.

It’s a common misconception that water resistant devices can be fully submerged. While the best water resistant hearing aids have protective coatings and tightly sealed components, they are built to handle moisture from rain or sweat—not a dip in the ocean or the pool. Always check your device’s specific Ingress Protection (IP) rating with your hearing care professional.
If you are interested in the latest technology designed to handle an active lifestyle, many modern rechargeable hearing aids offer higher IP ratings for superior protection against moisture and dust.

Hearing Protection

At Amplifon, we offer customised hearing protection that comfortably fits your ears and reduces ambient noise. Our high-quality solutions provide reliable ear protection for various environments, such as swimming.

How can I protect my hearing aid against heat?

Protecting your aids from heat is straightforward: never leave them in direct sunlight or in a hot car, as the intense Australian sun can quickly warp the casing and drain batteries. A car parked in the sun can become an oven in minutes. The extreme temperature inside can severely damage the sensitive electronics and microphone mechanisms. Always carry your devices in a protective case and keep them in a cool, shaded place when you take them out.

Surviving sweat and humidity

Perspiration is a major factor in the Australian climate. Even if you're just enjoying a gentle walk in the park, sweat can be an issue.

Here are some practical tips:

Wipe Down Daily

Use a dry, soft cloth or a specialised hearing aid wipe to gently clean the devices every time you take them out. Focus on the microphone and battery door.

Use a Drying Kit

A dehumidifier or a dedicated drying box is the single best investment for summer. Place your hearing aids (with the battery door open) inside every night to actively remove trapped moisture.

Hats and Headbands

If you know you’ll be sweating, consider a moisture-wicking headband or a cap to act as a barrier and absorb excess moisture before it reaches your device.

Ultimate summer checklist: Care tips for hearing aids

Maintaining your hearing aids through the summer is all about routine. Here is a simple checklist to follow through the hotter months.

Moisture

Use a hearing aid drying kit every night, even if you don't think they got wet.

Batteries

Remove batteries from the device overnight to allow the compartment to air out and prevent corrosion.

Cleaning

Always clean the device after using sunscreen, bug spray, or hairspraythese chemicals are damaging.

Sand & Dust

Clean your devices immediately if they come into contact with sand. Use a soft brush, not a pin.

Storage

Store the devices in a cool, dark, and secure location, away from children and pets. Never leave them on a bathroom counter.

What should I do if my hearing aids get wet?

If your hearing aids accidentally get exposed to too much water—whether a sudden downpour or a splash from water sportsdon’t panic.

1. Remove the Battery

Immediately open the battery door and remove the battery to prevent corrosion and short-circuiting.

2. Dry Excess Water

Gently wipe the outside of the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use a hairdryer or oven—extreme heat will cause more damage.

3. Place in Drying Kit

Leave the device in a dedicated dehumidifier or drying box for a minimum of 24 hours.

4. Visit an Expert

If the device still won't work, book an appointment immediately. Do not try to repair it yourself. Your hearing care professional at an Amplifon hearing aid clinic has the expertise and tools to professionally dry and service your technology.
