How to clean a hearing aid earmould?

A clean earmould ensures that sound travels clearly from the hearing aid to your ear canal, maintaining the optimal performance of your device.

To clean a hearing aid earmould, first detach it from the main hearing aid body, then use a soft cloth and a professional ear mould cleaning kit to gently wipe away debris and clear any tubing blockages.

It's a simple process that should be done every few days or so, depending on how much ear wax you produce.

Step-by-Step earmould cleaning guide

Here are the precise steps for effective, safe cleaning of a removable earmould:

Step 1: Detach Safely

Carefully disconnect the ear mould from the hook or tube of the main hearing aid body.

Step 2: Wipe Down

Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the entire surface of the earmould to remove surface oils and moisture.

Step 3: Remove Blockages

Use the small loop or brush tool from your ear mould cleaning kit to clear any visible ear wax from the sound bore (the opening that goes into your ear) and the vents.

Step 4: Deep Clean (Optional)

If the earmould is heavily soiled and the tube is disconnected, you can soak the plastic part in warm, soapy water (using mild dish soap). Rinse well and ensure it is completely dry before reattaching.

Step 5: Re-attach

Once fully dry, re-attach the earmould to the hearing aid.

How to clean earwax from the hearing aid mould?

The key to cleaning ear wax is to avoid pushing it further into the device's tube or vent.

To clean ear wax from a hearing aid mould, use a wax loop or wire tool to gently scoop out debris from the sound bore and vents, or use a small air blower bulb to push loose wax out of the tube.

If the tubing itself is blocked, you can use a small, specialised wire (often included in your cleaning kit) to pass through the tube, clearing the blockage. If the wax is stubborn or you’re uncomfortable doing it yourself, visit your local Amplifon hearing aid clinic for professional cleaning.

What dissolves earwax from a hearing aid?

Mild soap and water can clean the exterior of the earmold, however you must be careful about what you use inside the delicate tubes and vents.

Only use specialised, non-alcoholic cleaning sprays or wipes recommended by your hearing care professional. Do not use household solvents, alcohol, or harsh chemicals, as these can permanently damage the plastic and tubing of your ear mold.

The safest solution is always water and mild soap for the plastic surface, followed by complete drying.

How often should you replace hearing aid moulds?

The lifespan of your earmoulds depends on the material (hard or soft) and your ear’s physiology.

Soft, flexible ear moulds for hearing aids typically need replacing every six months to a year as they can shrink or harden. Hard, custom-fit molds may last several years, but should be replaced if you experience slippage, discomfort, or persistent feedback.

Regular check-ups at Amplifon, included in our ongoing care, allow our experts to assess the fit and condition of your custom ear moulds for hearing aids.

Do I need a custom fit hearing aid mould?

A custom fit hearing aid mould provides the best possible coupling between the device and your ear canal, leading to better sound quality, less feedback, and greater comfort.

Custom ear molds for hearing aids are often recommended for those with severe hearing loss, as they prevent sound leakage (feedback), or for anyone seeking maximum comfort and security.

They are made specifically to the unique shape of your ear by taking a precise impression, ensuring a secure and discreet fit.
