Quick-Check: Is the Hearing Aid Working?

The simplest way to troubleshoot hearing aids that aren't working is to check the power and the sound outlet.

Before diving into complex steps, confirm the following basic checks:

No Sound

Is the power on? Turn it off and on again.

Too Quiet

Is the volume too low? Increase the volume or check if a program (like a "quiet mode") is accidentally active.

Battery Dead

Is the battery or charger working? Replace the battery with a fresh one or ensure your rechargeable hearing aids are fully charged.

Muted Sound

Is the sound pathway blocked? Inspect the dome, hearing aid filters (wax guards), or tubing for visible earwax.

If you've checked these four items and the issue persists, move to the specific problems below.

Test your hearing ability

1. Hearing Aid Is Too Quiet or Has No Sound

This is the most frequent issue, and almost always points to a blockage or power failure.

Power Troubleshooting

Dead Battery

Likely Cause: Disposable battery is depleted or inserted incorrectly.

Solution: Replace the battery immediately, ensuring the positive (+) side is facing up/correctly.

Recharge Issue

Likely Cause: Device not sitting correctly in the charger.

Solution: Wipe the charging contacts on the aid and the charger with a dry tissue and re-seat the aid until the charging light turns on.

Moisture

Likely Cause: Humidity or sweat has entered the device.

Solution: Open the battery door or remove the aid from the charger and place it in a dry-box overnight.

Blockage Troubleshooting

If the power is fine, the issue is often earwax, which is a common issue with hearing aids.

Check the Wax Guard/Filter

If you have smaller devices (Receiver-In-Canal or In-The-Ear hearing aid troubleshooting), gently remove the dome and check the tiny white wax guard inside. If it looks clogged, perform a hearing aid filter replacement.

Check the Tubing (BTE)

If you have Behind-The-Ear with ear mould hearing aid troubleshooting, remove the earmould and look inside the tube. If the tube is discoloured, stiff, or has condensation, you likely need to change hearing aid tube.

2. Hearing Aid Is Whistling or Causing Feedback

A whistling sound (Hearing aid whistling) is called feedback, and it usually means sound is leaking out of your ear and being picked up by the microphone.

Re-Seat the Device

Gently push the hearing aid deeper into your ear. If the whistling stops, it means the fit was loose.

Check for Earwax

A large build-up of earwax in your ear canal can block the sound from travelling properly, reflecting it back out and causing feedback. If you suspect an internal blockage, consult a healthcare professional.

Inspect the Dome/Mould

Look for cracks, tears, or damage on your dome or custom ear mould. If the plastic is damaged, it creates a leak. You need a replacement dome or a new mould.

Too Loud

If the volume is set too high for your hearing loss, the sound may simply be too powerful for the seal. Try turning the volume down slightly.

3. Bluetooth Troubleshooting & Connectivity Issues

If you use Bluetooth troubleshooting for streaming calls or music from your smartphone, try these steps:

Steps for Bluetooth troubleshooting

Step One

Check Phone Settings

Ensure your phone's Bluetooth is turned on and the hearing aid is selected as the audio output device.

Step Two

Toggle Flight Mode

Turn your phone's Flight Mode on for 30 seconds, then turn it off. This often forces the phone to re-scan for devices.

Step Three

Forget and Re-Pair

In your phone's Bluetooth settings, select "Forget this Device" (or similar), and then go through the pairing process for your amplifon hearing aids again.

When to Call Your Amplifon Clinic

You've tried the whole hearing aids troubleshooting checklist, but the device is still dead, distorted, or whistling persistently.

It's time to contact your Amplifon expert if:

  • You hear a "broken" sound (a crackle, static, or distortion) even after changing the battery/clearing wax.
  • The device suddenly fails and cannot be revived by a new battery or charge.
  • The whistling only stops when you hold the device tightly, indicating a fit problem.

We have the tools and trusted expertise to perform an in-depth diagnostic check and repair.
