How to clean your RIC hearing aid

Our step-by-step cleaning guide for RIC and RITE hearing aids

Your Amplifon audiologist or audiometrist will have shown you how to clean your hearing aids that have a receiver that goes in the ear or canal (RIC/RITE), but if you need a refresher, here’s our guide to cleaning your hearing aids.

Daily RIC hearing aid cleaning routine

  • Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin wire thoroughly with ampliclear cleaning wipes or with a cloth to remove any dirt or dry wax.
  • Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet at the end of your dome by using the hearing aid brush provided.
  • If there is any moisture on your hearing aid, place it into an ampliclear dry cup.

Monthly RIC hearing aid care

  • Check the whole surface of your hearing aid and give it a thorough clean with ampliclear cleaning wipes. Pay particular attention to the microphones on the hearing aid which are two openings on the back of your hearing aid, usually found above the program button. Give these openings a gentle clean using a brush to remove any dirt or dust.
  • Change the wax filter if the filter is discoloured, dirty, or if there is wax inside that cannot be brushed out.
  • The pack of new filters you receive will include a tool to change the filter. Using one end, remove the old filter from the sound outlet, then, using the other end, carefully place a clean filter into its place.
  • Brush away any wax from around the dome.

RIC hearing aid maintenance on a six monthly basis

  • The wax filter on your hearing aid needs to be changed at least once every six months, so if you have not already changed the wax filter, you should do so now.
  • The pack of new filters you receive will include a tool to change the filter. Using one end, remove the old filter from the sound outlet, and, using the other end, carefully place a clean filter into its place.
  • Carefully check your domes, checking for tears, hardening or severe discolouration. If you see any of these in your domes please contact your local Amplifon clinic to arrange a cleaning check, where your hearing aid audiologist or audiometrist will change your domes.
  • If your hearing aids have a microphone protector, it will need to be changed at least once every six months as instructed by your hearing aid audiologist or audiometrist.
