ITE hearing aid filters: What you need to know

If you wear In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids—including ITC and invisible hearing aids like CIC models—you appreciate their discretion. However, because these devices sit entirely within your ear canal, maintaining the wax filter is an important step in maintaining clear sound.

Why is the wax filter critical for ITE hearing aids?

In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids place the speaker (receiver) directly where earwax is produced.

The wax filter is a small, disposable guard that protects the sensitive electronic components inside your ITE, ITC, or CIC hearing aid from earwax, moisture, and debris. Without a clean filter, earwax will block the sound outlet, leading to muffled or intermittent sound, or even permanent damage to the receiver unit. For tiny models, like completely in canal hearing aids (CIC), this guard is absolutely vital.

How often should I change ITE hearing aid filters?

The deep, custom fit of ITE aids means they are exposed to more earwax than other styles.

We strongly recommend replacing your ITE hearing aid filter immediately when the sound is blocked, or as a routine preventative measure every 2 to 4 weeks. Due to the high risk of blockage in the ear canal, custom-fit devices often require more frequent filter changes than external models. Check the filter weekly for visible wax build-up, especially if you have an active lifestyle or produce a lot of earwax.

Ear diseases and symptoms

Our hearing health can tell us a lot about any underlying ear problems or hearing conditions we may have, whether it be an easily treatable ear infection or other hearing diseases or issues.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to replace ITE hearing aid filters

Replacing the wax filter for hearing aids on ITE models is straightforward and requires the specific applicator stick provided with your replacement filters.

Follow these steps, working over a stable surface:

  1. Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly and ensure you have the new filter pack.
  2. Identify the filter: Locate the sound output hole on the tip of your ITE hearing aid. The old filter will be visible inside this hole.
  3. Use the applicator stick: Open the new filter pack. The applicator stick has two ends: one pointed end for removal and one end with the new, clean filter.
  4. Remove the old filter: Insert the pointed (removal) end of the stick straight into the centre of the blocked filter. Gently pull the stick straight out. The old, dirty filter should be attached to the stick.
  5. Insert the new filter: Turn the stick around. Insert the end with the new, clean filter straight into the now-empty opening. Press gently until the filter sits flush with the hearing aid surface.
  6. Complete: Remove the stick and test the device. The sound should now be crystal clear.

Frequently Asked Questions about ITE hearing aid maintenance

Why does my ITE hearing aid whistle after replacing the filter?

Whistling (feedback) usually happens if the hearing aid is not seated correctly or if the sound is escaping. Check the filter replacement area; if the filter is slightly loose or crooked, it can cause acoustic feedback. If the shell itself is lose, you may need a physical shell adjustment, so book an appointment.

Can I clean the sound bore with a pin or cotton swab?

Absolutely not. You should never insert anything sharp like a pin, or anything that leaves residue like a cotton swab, into the sound bore (the hole where the filter sits). This will push debris into the delicate receiver, causing permanent damage. Only use the provided filter stick for removal and replacement.

How do I clean the rest of my ITE hearing aid shell?

Use the small brush provided in your maintenance kit to gently brush any wax or debris off the surface of the shell. Wipe the shell with a clean, dry cloth. Never use water or alcohol, as moisture is the biggest enemy of your in-the-ear hearing aids.
