Sound Tourism: Listen to Western Australia’s Wildflower Season

Spring is here, and Western Australia is bursting into colour. But wildflower season isn’t only som.

September is a spectacular time to experience Western Australia’s wildflowers, as colourful blooms transform bushland, parks and walking trails across the state. While the flowers might catch your eye first, there’s another side to the season waiting to be discovered. From the gentle buzz of native bees to the rustle of eucalyptus leaves and birds calling overhead, wildflower season has a soundtrack of its own.

At Amplifon, we believe the sounds around us are an important part of how we experience the places and moments we love. So this spring, why not discover Western Australia with your ears as well as your eyes?

What does wildflower season sound like?

Head out on a spring walk and take a moment to listen.

You might hear native bees buzzing from flower to flower, busy among the spring blooms. A breeze might move through the eucalyptus trees, creating a gentle rustling overhead. And if you’re lucky, you may hear the distinctive call of a black cockatoo carrying across the bush.

Then there are the quieter details: footsteps along a walking track, insects nearby or birds calling in the distance. Individually, they may seem like small sounds. Together, they create the unmistakable soundtrack of an Australian spring.

And these everyday sounds can play an important part in how we connect with the world around us. Hearing allows us to experience more of a place, not just what we can see, but everything happening around us.

Where to experience Western Australia’s wildflowers this spring

Western Australia is home to more than 12,000 species of wildflowers, making it one of the world’s most remarkable destinations for native flora.

Wildflower season typically begins in the north of the state before moving south as the weather warms, with September offering plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and experience the Spring displays.

If you’re in Perth, Kings Park and Botanic Garden is one of the easiest places to discover Western Australia’s native flora without leaving the city. Further afield, there are plenty of walking trails and natural areas where colourful wildflowers meet the sounds of the Australian bush.

Wherever you choose to explore, try making listening part of the experience.

Discover a different side of Australia with Sound Tourism

Some of our strongest memories of a place aren’t only connected to what we saw. They’re connected to what we heard, too.

That’s the idea behind Sound Tourism: discovering a destination through its unique soundscape and paying closer attention to the sounds that give a place its character.  For Amplifon, it’s also a reminder of just how much hearing adds to the experiences we enjoy every day.

This wildflower season, listen for the bees among the blooms. Hear the breeze moving through the eucalyptus leaves. Notice the birds calling from the trees. You might be surprised by how much more there is to discover when you stop and listen.

Are you hearing every sound of Spring?

Changes in hearing can happen gradually, which means they aren’t always immediately noticeable. Sometimes, it’s the little things that can provide the first clue. You might find yourself turning up the television, asking people to repeat themselves or noticing that quieter sounds, such as birdsong, insects buzzing or leaves rustling, aren’t quite as clear as they used to be.

Taking care of your hearing can help you stay connected to the people, places and experiences that matter to you.

A hearing check is a simple way to learn more about your hearing. At Amplifon, our hearing care professionals can assess your hearing, talk you through your results and help you understand the next steps, if any are needed.
