Follow the Sounds of Spring

Discover three places where spring is something you can hear as well as see.

Spring has a way of inviting us outside

The days get longer, landscapes begin to change and weekends start to feel made for getting away. But while spring is often a season we notice with our eyes — brighter skies, greener landscapes and flowers returning — some of its most memorable signs are the ones we can hear.

The first birds of the morning. Waves breaking against the coast. Wind moving through the trees. The crunch of a walking trail beneath your feet.

At Amplifon, we believe sound can transform the way we experience a place. It can tell us where we are, draw our attention to details we might otherwise miss and become part of the memories we take home with us.

That’s what Sound Tourism is all about: slowing down, tuning in and discovering a destination through its unique soundtrack.

So, where will spring take you? Pack your walking shoes, leave some room in your itinerary to simply listen, and discover three soundscapes worth travelling for.

Adelaide Hills: start the day with birdsong

There’s something about birdsong that feels unmistakably like the beginning of a new day — and spring is an ideal time to listen for it.

A short journey from Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills offer a change of pace from the city, with bushland, reserves, walking trails and rolling countryside creating plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. And while the scenery may be the first thing that catches your attention, try letting your ears explore too. Head out for a walk in the quieter hours of the morning and the landscape begins to reveal itself through sound. Bird calls travel between the trees, leaves shift overhead and the breeze moves through the surrounding bush.

Rather than treating these sounds as background noise, make them part of the experience. Stop somewhere along the trail and listen for a minute. Can you hear one bird or several? Are the calls coming from nearby branches or somewhere further into the bush? What other sounds appear once you start paying attention? It’s a simple exercise, but one that can make a familiar landscape feel completely different.

And perhaps that’s part of the joy of listening while we travel: you don’t always need to find somewhere new to discover something new.

The sound of the trip: birdsong carrying across the Adelaide Hills.

Amplifon listening tip: Early mornings can offer a particularly rich natural soundscape. Find a quiet place, pause for a few minutes and see how many different sounds you can distinguish without looking for their source.

Cape Woolamai: follow the sound of the waves

If the Adelaide Hills invites you to listen closely, Cape Woolamai delivers a sound that is much harder to miss.

On Phillip Island, the coastline creates a dramatic meeting point between land and sea. Walking through the area, the soundtrack changes as you move: wind crosses the open landscape, seabirds call overhead and, in the distance, the ocean provides a constant rhythm.

Then come the waves. Listen as they build offshore, roll towards the coast and finally break against the shore. One disappears and another follows, each with a slightly different force and sound. It’s repetitive, but never quite the same. That rhythm can become part of the way you experience the walk. Instead of moving immediately towards the next viewpoint, find a place to stop and spend a few moments simply listening to the water. Close your eyes and the experience changes again. Without the landscape competing for your attention, you might notice the smaller details around the main event: the wind, distant bird calls or the moment of relative quiet between two waves. These are the sounds that photographs can’t quite bring home.

Amplifon listening tip: Try experiencing the same sound from different points along your walk. Distance, wind and the surrounding landscape can completely change the way the ocean sounds.

Cradle Mountain: hear the forest come alive

Not every memorable soundscape needs to be loud. Around Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, some of the most rewarding sounds are also the easiest to overlook.

Walk through the region and spring reveals itself gradually: wind moving through the canopy, branches shifting, birds calling from somewhere beyond the trail and water flowing through the landscape.

Then there are the sounds created by your own journey — footsteps over earth and gravel, the occasional crack of a twig or the changing sound beneath your feet as the terrain changes. Together, these details create a soundtrack that can make you feel immersed in the landscape rather than simply passing through it.

It’s also a place that rewards a slower pace. Every so often, stop walking. Put your phone away and listen. Without the sound of your own footsteps, what can you hear that you hadn’t noticed before? Perhaps it’s water somewhere nearby. A bird hidden among the trees. A sudden gust of wind moving from one side of the forest to the other.

Sometimes, the quietest places give us the most to listen to.

Amplifon listening tip: Give yourself a “listening break” during your walk. Spend a minute focusing first on the closest sound you can hear, then the furthest away. It’s an easy way to tune into the depth of the landscape around you.

Listen more

We often come home from a trip with hundreds of photos. But some memories aren’t visual at all. They’re the call of a bird that woke us in the morning. The sound of waves during a long coastal walk. The wind in the trees when everyone around us suddenly went quiet. Sound gives places character. It helps turn a destination into an experience and, long after a trip is over, a familiar sound can sometimes take us straight back there. That’s why hearing plays such an important role in how we connect with the world around us.

At Amplifon Australia, helping people stay connected to the sounds they love is at the heart of what we do. From everyday conversations to the sounds of nature encountered on your next adventure, looking after your hearing means looking after an important part of how you experience life.

If you’ve noticed that certain sounds aren’t as clear as they once were — perhaps birds seem harder to pick out, conversations are more difficult in busy places or you find yourself turning the volume up — a hearing check with Amplifon can help you better understand your hearing.

Because there are plenty of places still to discover, and plenty of sounds worth hearing along the way. This spring, whether you’re listening to birdsong in the Adelaide Hills, the crashing waves at Cape Woolamai or the wind through the forests around Cradle Mountain, try travelling a little differently.

Take in the view. Then stop and listen to it as well.
