Paul's story

Hear from someone who took the first step for a better hearing.
Last update on Jul, 03, 2019

Making that first move isn’t easy. But hearing from someone who did can help.

Meet Paul, a retired park ranger from regional New South Wales who once thought hearing aids weren’t for him. Today, he doesn’t leave home without them especially when heading into the great outdoors.

I stopped joining bushwalks as I couldn’t keep up with the chat and felt left out.

Paul, retired park ranger, 65 years old.

Before: silence in the bush

“For a while, I just assumed it was part of getting older,” Paul shares. “Birdsong faded. The wind through the gum trees became just a hum. I even started avoiding bushwalks with mates—I couldn’t keep up with conversations, and it made me feel left out.”

Despite spending most of his life in nature, Paul found himself slowly disconnecting from the very sounds that brought him peace.

It was actually my mate who convinced me to get tested. He told me: 'You’re missing out, mate'

The moment: a push from a friend, support from Amplifon

“It was actually my mate who convinced me to get tested,” Paul says. “He told me, ‘You’re missing out, mate.’ He was right. I didn’t realise how much until I tried hearing aids for the first time.”

At his local Amplifon clinic in Wagga Wagga, Paul met Emily, a certified audiologist who understands how important lifestyle is to hearing solutions.

“Paul came in a bit hesitant, like many people do,” Emily recalls. “But once we talked about his love of the bush and being outdoors, I knew exactly what kind of support he needed. It was about more than hearing—it was about reconnecting with what he loved most.”

Paul adds, “Emily made the whole process feel easy. She really listened and helped me find something that suited my lifestyle. Now I feel more connected and confident doing the things I loveespecially out in nature.”

After: back on the track, fully tuned in

Now, Paul’s days are filled with the rustle of eucalyptus leaves, the sound of rosellas overhead, and the laughter of friends on their weekend bushwalks.

“I don’t go a day without them,” he says. “They’re not just hearing aids—they help me stay sharp, stay social, and enjoy every moment, especially outdoors.”

“Watching Paul head back out into nature, confident and happy—that’s what this job is all about,” Emily says. “When someone discovers joy in their everyday life, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
