How to clean your BTE hearing aid

Our step-by-step cleaning guide for BTE hearing devices

Your Amplifon Audiologist will have shown you how to clean your hearing aids that goes behing your ear (BTE) - if you need a refresher, though, here's our guide as a reminder for your cleaning routine.

Cleaning BTE hearing aids: Daily Tasks

Clean the Dome and Wire

Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin wire thoroughly with Ampliclear cleaning wipes or with the Ampliclear cleaning spray and cloth provided, to remove any dirt or dry wax.

Clean the Sound Outlet

Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet at the end of your dome using the brush provided.

Remove Moisture

If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, place it into an Ampliclear dry cup or an airing cupboard overnight.

Cleaning BTE: Monthly Tasks

Clean the Hearing Aid Surface

Check the whole surface of your hearing aid and give it a thorough clean with ampliclear cleaning wipes. Pay particular attention to the microphones on the hearing aid. There are two openings on the back of your aid, usually above your program button. Give these microphone holes a gentle clean with a brush to remove any build up of dirt or dust.

How to clean BTE: Six Monthly Tasks

Check Your Domes

Carefully inspect your domes for deterioration such as tears, hardening, or severe discolouring. If you notice any issues, contact your local Amplifon hearing centre to arrange a 5-star service check, during which your Hearing Aid Audiologist will replace the domes.

Check Your Thin Tubes

Inspect your thin tubes for splits, kinks, hardening, or severe discolouring. If there are any problems, contact your local Amplifon hearing centre for a 5-star service check, where your Hearing Aid Audiologist will replace the tubes.

Replace Microphone Protectors

If your hearing aid has microphone protectors, they should be replaced at least once every six months as instructed by your Hearing Aid Audiologist.

BTE hearing aids with moulds: Dailiy Tasks

Clean the Mould Surface

Wipe down the surface of your mould with Ampliclear cleaning wipes or with the Ampliclear cleaning spray and cloth to remove any dirt or dry wax.

Clean the Sound Outlet

Remove any dirt from the sound outlet using the brush provided. The other end of the brush can help loosen stuck wax.

Clean the Vent Hole

If your hearing aid has a small vent hole under the sound outlet, clean it using Ampliclear airspray or the brush provided.

Remove Moisture

If you notice moisture on your hearing aid, place it in an Ampliclear dry cup or an airing cupboard overnight.

Clear Moisture from the Tubing

Check the tubing for moisture droplets. If present, detach the tubing and use an Ampliclear airball to remove moisture before reattaching it.

Detach the Tubing

Remove the tubing from your hearing aid where the two meet. Hold the hook and the tubing and gently pull them apart.

Clear Wax with Airspray

Use Ampliclear airspray to blow air through the detached tubing to remove any wax trapped inside.

Wash the Mould and Tubing

Alternatively, wash the mould and tubing in warm soapy water. Do not put the hearing aid near water. Rinse thoroughly and allow everything to dry completely before reattaching.

Six Monthly Tasks

Replace Worn Tubing

Tubing can deteriorate over time and affect sound quality. It should be replaced every six to twelve months. If it becomes hard, discoloured, or the sound drops noticeably, contact your local Amplifon hearing centre for a 5-star service check.

Replace Microphone Protectors

If your hearing aid has microphone protectors, they should be replaced at least every six months, as advised by your Hearing Aid Audiologist.
