Take a free hearing health check and learn your Hearing Number

Last update on Jul, 31, 2025

Easily assess your hearing health from home with our free online hearing test. You’ll receive an initial evaluation by calculating your Hearing Number, giving valuable insights into your hearing abilities.

What is the Hearing Number?

The Hearing Number was developed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, to introduce a common metric for hearing. The Hearing Number reflects your sensitivity to sounds and speech. It is calculated by analysing 4 key frequencies essential for understanding speech, which represent different voice tones and sounds. The lower your Hearing Number, the better your ability to perceive faint sounds. A higher number may suggest a reduction in hearing sensitivity at certain frequencies.

How the online hearing test works

Our online test measures your ability to hear sounds at frequencies of 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, and 4000 Hz—crucial for understanding everyday speech. After completing the test, you’ll receive your Hearing Number in decibels (dB). A higher number indicates louder sounds are needed to hear them, suggesting possible hearing loss.

How to read your Hearing Number

Your Hearing Number provides insight into the quality of your hearing. The ranges are as follows:

  • Normal hearing: 0 to 20 dB
  • Mild hearing loss: 20 to 34 dB
  • Moderate hearing loss: 35 to 49 dB
  • Severe hearing loss: 50 to 64 dB
  • Very severe hearing loss: 65 to 79 dB

While this test offers a useful initial insight, it is not a substitute for a professional evaluation. We recommend consulting a hearing specialist for a comprehensive assessment.

How can I test my hearing online?

The online hearing test is quick, easy, and accessible on any device — whether it's your smartphone, tablet, or computer. All you need is a pair of headphones and a quiet environment to get started. The test will guide you through each step, and you’ll receive your results immediately upon completion.

Remember, this test provides a useful initial evaluation, but it doesn’t replace a professional diagnosis. If you experience unusual results, we recommend consulting an audiologist.
