Cleaning different types of hearing aids

How to clean ITE, BTE and RIC products

A hearing aid is made up of several different parts, each of which will need regular cleaning to ensure maximum performance and lifespan for your device. If you need extra help you can contact your local Amplifon clinic where our experts can help you through the process.

ITE hearing aids cleaning

Daily Tasks

  • Wipe down the surface of your hearing aid with Ampliclear cleaning wipes, or with the Ampliclear cleaning spray and cloth provided to remove any dirt or dry wax.
  • Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet by using the brush provided.
  • If your hearing aid has a small vent hole under the sound outlet, clean this with Ampliclear air sprayer or the brush provided.
  • If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into an Ampliclear dry cup or leave it in an airing cupboard overnight.

Monthly Tasks

  • Gently brush the microphone openings with a clean brush to remove any dust or dirt. The microphones on your hearing aid are small openings located above or below your battery tray. There may be one or two microphones.
  • Check the condition of the wax filter. If your filter is looking discoloured or dirty, or if there is wax in it; that you cannot brush out, it is time to change the filter. Your pack of new filters will include a tool to change the filter. Use one end to remove the old filter from the sound outlet, and use the other end to carefully push another clean filter into its place.

Six-Monthly Tasks

  • If you haven't already changed the wax filter on your hearing aid you should do so now. These filters need to be changed at least once every six months.
  • Your pack of new filters will include a tool to change the filter. Use one end to remove the old filter from the sound outlet, and use the other end to carefully push another clean filter into its place.

BTE open-fitting hearing aids cleaning

Daily Tasks

  • Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin wire thoroughly with Ampliclear cleaning wipes or with the Ampliclear cleaning spray and cloth provided, to remove any dirt or dry wax.
  • Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet at the end of your dome by using the brush provided.
  • If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, put it into an Ampliclear dry cup or leave it in an airing cupboard overnight.
  • Check the tubing for wax. If there are any blockages detach the tubing from the hearing aid where they meet. Then pass the cleaning thread through the tubing and pull out at the other end. Once clean, reattach the tubing to the hearing aid.

Monthly Tasks

Check the whole surface of your hearing aid and give it a thorough clean with Ampliclear cleaning wipes. Pay particular attention to the microphones on the hearing aid. There are two openings on the back of your aid, usually above your program button. Give these microphone holes a gentle clean with a brush to remove any build up of dirt or dust.

Six-Monthly Tasks

  • Carefully check your domes for deterioration such as tears, hardening or severe discolouring. If you see deterioration, please contact your local Amplifon hearing centre to arrange a 5 star service check, in which your Hearing Aid professional  will change your domes.
  • Similarly, check your thin tubes to make sure there are no splits or kinks in the tubing. 
  • Check for any hardening or severe discolouring. If there are any problems with your tubing contact your local Amplifon hearing centre to arrange a 5 star service check, in which your Hearing Aid professional will change your thin tubes.
  • If your hearing aid has microphone protectors these will need to be changed at least once every six months as instructed by your Amplifon professional. 

BTE moulded hearing aids

Daily Tasks

  • Wipe down the surface of your mould with Ampliclear cleaning wipes or with the Ampliclear cleaning spray and cloth provided to remove any dirt or dry wax.
  • Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet by using the brush provided. The other end of the brush can also be used to pick free any wax that has become stuck in the sound outlet.
  • If your hearing aid has a small vent hole under the sound outlet, clean this with an Ampliclear air sprayer and the brush provided.
  • If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into an Ampliclear dry cup or leave it in an airing cupboard overnight.
  • Check your tubing for moisture droplets. If any are found, remove the tubing from the hearing aid where the two meet. Then use an Ampliclear air ball to clear the moisture before reattaching the tubing to the hearing aid.

Monthly Tasks

  • Remove the tubing from your hearing aid where the two meet. They should pull apart by holding the hook of the hearing aid and the tubing and pulling gently.
  • Use your Ampliclear air sprayer to blow air through the tubing from the end you just detached, which will clean out any wax stuck further into the tubing.
  • Alternatively you can put your mould and tubing into warm soapy water, being careful to keep the hearing aid itself well away from the water. Once you have soaked your tubing and mould you should rinse it thoroughly and leave to dry completely before reattaching it to the hearing aid.

Six-Monthly Tasks

  • The tubing will deteriorate over time and may affect the sound quality. This tubing needs to be changed every six to twelve months. If you feel your tubing has become hard or discoloured, or the sound quality has dropped noticeably, please contact your local Amplifon hearing centre to arrange a 5 star service check, in which your Hearing Aid professional will change your tubing.
  • If your hearing aid has microphone protectors these will need to be changed at least once every six months as instructed by your Hearing Aid professional.

  • Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin wire thoroughly with Ampliclear cleaning wipes or with the cloth provided, to remove any dirt or dry wax.
  • Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet at the end of your dome by using the brush provided.
  • If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, put it into your Drylux, an Ampliclear dry cup or leave it in an airing cupboard overnight.

Monthly Tasks

  • Check the whole surface of your hearing aid and give it a thorough clean with Ampliclear cleaning wipes. Pay particular attention to the microphones on the hearing aid which are two openings on the back of your aid, usually above your program button.
