Crackling in ear: causes and symptoms

A crackling in the ear is a common sensation described as clicking, popping, or a light static-like noise inside one or both ears. It can appear occasionally or become more noticeable during specific movements such as swallowing, chewing, yawning or changes in head position. While often harmless, it can feel distracting or worrying, especially when it persists or becomes frequent.

In most cases, ear crackling is related to pressure regulation in the middle ear, fluid movement or interactions between the jaw and nearby ear structures. Identifying when it occurs and whether other symptoms are present helps narrow down the possible cause.

The cause of crackling sound in ear is most often linked to how the middle ear balances air pressure. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and opens when we swallow or yawn. If this system is irritated or partially blocked, it can create clicking or crackling sensations.

Common causes include:

• Eustachian tube dysfunction from colds or allergies
• sinus congestion or inflammation
• fluid behind the eardrum
• earwax buildup affecting sound transmission
• pressure changes from flying or altitude shifts
• jaw tension or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction

In some cases, more than one factor may contribute at the same time, making the sensation more noticeable or persistent.

A very common pattern is hearing crackling when swallowing or moving the jaw. This happens because both actions influence pressure in the middle ear or movement near the ear canal.

Typical examples include:

• crackling in ear when swallowing
• crackling sound in ear when chewing
• crackling in ear when opening the mouth
• crackling noise in ear when moving jaw

Swallowing activates the Eustachian tube, while jaw movement can influence nearby structures connected to the ear. If either system is slightly irritated or tense, small clicking or popping sounds may occur.

Ear crackling often appears during or after upper respiratory conditions. When the nose and sinuses are congested, the Eustachian tube may not open properly, leading to pressure imbalance inside the ear.

This can result in:

• crackling in ear with a cold
• crackling in ears when sick
• crackling in ear when blowing nose
• crackling in ear after sinus congestion

Changes in pressure, such as flying, swimming or even showering, can also temporarily affect ear function and produce similar sensations.

Some people notice crackling after ear cleaning, ear drops, or procedures such as microsuction. This is usually related to temporary fluid movement or mild irritation inside the ear canal.

It may also occur after:

• earwax removal
• hydrogen peroxide use
• swimming or water exposure
• recent ear infection recovery

In most cases, the sensation is temporary and resolves as the ear returns to normal.
