How to turn on and off hearing aids

How to switch on/off your hearing aid?

Hearing aids are essential devices for many individuals with hearing loss, offering increased comfort and improved hearing experiences. While they are designed to be user-friendly, it's important to understand how to properly turn them on and off to preserve battery life and avoid damage. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you with the process.

How to Turn On Hearing Aids

  • Locate the Power Button: Most hearing aids feature a small power button or switch. Depending on the brand and model, this button might be located on the device’s body or behind the ear.
  • Open the Battery Compartment (if applicable): If your hearing aid uses disposable batteries, open the battery compartment to activate the power. In many models, the hearing aid will automatically turn on once the battery compartment is closed.
  • Press and Hold the Power Button: For models with a dedicated power button, press and hold the button for 2-3 seconds until you hear a sound (such as a beep) or feel a vibration indicating the device is powered on.
  •  Automatic Activation: Some newer hearing aids have automatic activation. Simply wearing the device behind or in your ear may trigger the hearing aid to power on when it senses that it is in place.

How to Turn Off Hearing Aids

  • Locate the Power Button: Similar to turning on the device, find the power button or switch on your hearing aid.
  • Press and Hold the Power Button: Hold the power button for about 3 seconds until you hear a different sound or feel a vibration. This signals that the device is powering off.
  • Open the Battery Compartment (for disposable batteries): If your hearing aid uses disposable batteries, simply open the battery compartment to disconnect the battery and turn the device off. Be careful not to remove the battery entirely if you want to preserve the battery’s life.
  • Automatic Deactivation (for some models): If your hearing aid has an automatic feature, it may turn off when removed from the ear or when placed in a charging case.

Powering On/Off: different types of hearing aids

Rechargeable

To turn rechargeable hearing aids on, first, ensure the hearing aids are charged. Place them in their charging case overnight or for several hours to ensure they have enough power. If your hearing aids have a power button, press and hold it for a couple of seconds until you hear a beep or feel a vibration indicating that the device is on. Many modern rechargeable hearing aids feature automatic activation. In such cases, simply remove the hearing aid from the charging case and place it in your ear, and it will power on automatically.

To turn off rechargeable hearing aids, if they have a power button, press and hold the button for about 2-3 seconds until you hear a tone or feel a vibration, signaling that the device is powered off. However, many rechargeable hearing aids will automatically power off when placed back in their charging case. If your hearing aids have this feature, simply return them to the case after use, and they will turn off and begin charging.

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing aids are easy to use, with simple steps to turn them on and off. To turn on, make sure the device is properly fitted with a charged battery or placed in the charging case for rechargeable models. For disposable battery models, close the battery compartment after inserting the battery, and the device will activate. If there’s a power button, press and hold it for 2-3 seconds until you hear a beep or feel a vibration.

To turn off the hearing aid, press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds, or open the battery compartment for disposable models to disconnect the battery. Rechargeable models will automatically turn off when placed back in the charging case.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are easy to operate, with a few simple steps to turn them on and off. To turn on, ensure the hearing aid has a charged battery (for disposable models) or is placed in the charging case (for rechargeable models). For models with disposable batteries, insert the battery, close the compartment, and the hearing aid will automatically power on. If your BTE has a power button, press and hold it for a few seconds until you hear a sound or feel a vibration.

To turn off the hearing aid, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until you hear a tone or feel a vibration signaling that it’s off. For disposable battery models, open the battery compartment to disconnect the battery and power off the device. Rechargeable BTE hearing aids will turn off automatically when placed back in their charging case.

In-the-Ear (ITE)

In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids are compact and easy to use. To turn them on, ensure the device has a charged battery (for disposable models) or is in the charging case (for rechargeable models). For models with disposable batteries, insert the battery into the compartment and close it, which will typically activate the hearing aid. If your ITE hearing aid has a power button, press and hold it for a couple of seconds until you hear a beep or feel a vibration.

To turn off the hearing aid, press and hold the power button for a few seconds, or open the battery compartment for disposable models to disconnect the battery and turn off the device. Rechargeable ITE hearing aids will turn off automatically when placed in their charging case.
