Solutions

To find a solution to the problem early diagnosis is important so that immediate treatment is possible on two fronts: acoustic aids can amplify and elaborate acoustic signals and a re-education programme can be carried out by highly-qualified specialists.

The technological solutions available include hearing aids, vibrotactile aids and cochlear implants. A hearing aid is an amplifier of sounds which, thanks to microelectronic technology, has been perfected to the point where it has become a sound processor.

Vibrotactile aids are instruments, which convert sound into signals that can be transmitted via subcutaneous receptors; these are used in cases of serious deafness when the use of a hearing aid is not possible.

The cochlear implant, otherwise known as the cochlear prosthesis, is a device that causes the electrical stimulation of the cochlea, substituting the function of the cilial hairs, transforming sound into electrical impulses which directly stimulate the acoustic nerve.
