Around the World in Sound

Travel around the world in sound. Sound helps us to make sense of the world around us, and certain sounds can trigger memories. A recent survey by Amplifon, the worldwide dedicated hearing specialist found that two thirds of Brits say sounds evoke memories of places they have visited.

Amplifon Hearing specialists Jennifer and Emma help improve India’s hearing

Jennifer a Norwich/Ipswich hearing specialist and Emma a Preston/Blackburn/Blackpool hearing specialist travel to India as part of a project to help improve the hearing of some of the country’s poorest people.

Jennifer Spindler, a Hearing Aid Audiologist with Amplifon’s regional team in Norwich/Ipswich and Emma Haouche, a Hearing Aid Audiologist with Amplifon’s regional team in Preston/Blackpool/Blackburn will visit communities in the state of Gujarat to carry out hearing checks and fit some of the 1,000 reconditioned hearing aids donated by Amplifon customers as part of an initiative organised by De Montfort University’s Square Mile India Project.

The hearing aids, donated by Amplifon customers from all 134 UK and Ireland branches of the global hearing specialist, have been cleaned, assessed and reprogrammed at the company’s Leicester branch before being sent out to help people with hearing problems in Gujurat.

Jennifer and Emma, who will graduate from her Amplifon Foundation Degree in Audiology at De Montfort in January will travel to India as part of DMU Global, the university’s international student enrichment programme, which encourages students to use their skills to create positive change in overseas communities.

Along with five other students Jennifer and Emma will spend nine days in India putting their clinical skills into practice by offering hearing checks and fitting donated hearing aids at a hospital in the city of Rajkot as well as training staff to undertake basic hearing aid repairs.

They’ll then travel to Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat to carry out hearing screening tests in Ramapi No Tekra, an inner city area next to the Gandhi Ashram.

Jennifer, who works with Amplifon’s regional team to carry out free home visits to Amplifon customers across Norfolk/Suffolk and Emma who also works with Amplifon’s regional team to carry out free home visits to Amplifon customers across Lancashire said: “The trip is a fantastic opportunity to put our skills as Audiologist's into practice in a very different environment where resources are limited. We're really looking forward to visiting Gujarat and helping the people there to hear well again, using some of the hearing aids donated by our customers.”

Wendy Stevens, Senior Audiology Lecturer at De Montfort University, who has organised the Gujarat trip along with her colleague Audiology Lecturer Dr Jeff Davies said the experience students would gain during their time in India would be invaluable: “Hearing screening projects can transform the lives of people in poorer communities. Hearing loss can be very isolating, so being able to screen for hearing loss and fit hearing aids through programmes like Square Mile India can have a huge impact on people’s lives.

“I am hoping the trip will enable our students to make a real difference to people in Rajkot and Ahmedabad, and I know they’re all looking forward to it immensely.”

Jennifer, Emma and their fellow students will help to fit around 200 of the 1000 reprogrammed hearing aids donated by Amplifon customers.

Commenting on the India trip, Giuseppe Manzo, Market Director at Amplifon said: “We’re extremely proud Jennifer and Emma have been given the opportunity to put their skills as an Audiologist into practice in India.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to build on their knowledge and work with people in different communities.

“Amplifon has strong links with De Montfort, which provides the training course for our Audiologists, so we’re delighted to be able to support their Square Mile India project by providing reconditioned hearing aids kindly donated by our customers.”
